How to Prepare for Your First Alcohol Reduction Hypnotherapy Session

Last updated 20 August 2026. Reviewed by Paul Smith and Rebecca Smith, clinical hypnotherapists at Norwest Wellbeing.

Quick answer: Be clear on your actual goal (cutting down, stopping entirely, or specific-situation drinking), note your typical pattern honestly, and see your GP first if you may be physically dependent. Most clients need 2-5 sessions. Results vary.

Step 1: See your GP first if there's any chance of physical dependence

If you drink daily, drink heavily, or have experienced withdrawal symptoms (shaking, sweating, anxiety) when you've tried to cut back before, see your GP before your hypnotherapy session. This is a genuine safety step, not a formality, since sudden reduction can be medically risky for someone physically dependent.

Step 2: Get clear on your actual goal

Cutting down to a specific amount, stopping in certain situations only (weeknights, for example), resetting completely for a period, or stopping altogether, these are different goals, and being honest with yourself about which one you actually want makes the session more effective.

Step 3: Note your typical drinking pattern honestly

Roughly how much, how often, and in what situations, this doesn't need to be a precise log, but an honest general picture helps your practitioner understand your starting point without judgement.

Step 4: Identify your specific trigger situations

Stress after work, socialising with particular friends, weekends, boredom at home, most people find their drinking clusters around a smaller number of specific situations rather than happening evenly. Naming these helps target the session.

Step 5: Note what you've already tried

Dry months, tracking apps, cutting back on your own, whatever you've attempted and how it went gives your practitioner useful context on what hasn't worked and why.

Quick checklist before you book

  • GP assessment completed if physical dependence is a possibility
  • Your actual goal clearly defined
  • Honest general picture of your typical drinking pattern
  • Specific trigger situations identified
  • What you've already tried, and the result
  • Realistic expectations: 2-5 sessions, aiming for meaningful change rather than an instant fix

What to expect on the day

There is no need to do anything unusual before your session, and no need to have already cut back beforehand. The intake conversation is genuinely non-judgemental. The intake and the guided relaxation and suggestion work together generally run under an hour. Sessions are available in clinic at Norwest Wellbeing in Baulkham Hills or via Zoom Australia-wide.

What happens immediately after

Most people feel calm rather than dramatically transformed straight after the session. The real test tends to come the next time you encounter one of your specific trigger situations, and noticing whether the pull toward drinking feels less automatic.

Between sessions

Pay attention to whether cravings feel less intense in your trigger situations, and note any lapses honestly rather than treating them as failure. Mention both at your next session so your practitioner can adjust the focus of any follow-up work.

Common questions

Do I need to have already stopped drinking before my first session? No, and you shouldn't stop suddenly without medical advice if you may be dependent.

What if I'm not sure whether I'm dependent or just have a habit? Mention this honestly during intake, and see your GP for an assessment if there's any doubt.

Will I need to discuss embarrassing details about my drinking? The conversation is practical and non-judgemental, focused on patterns and triggers rather than detailed personal history.

Can hypnotherapy help with occasional binge drinking rather than daily drinking? Yes, situational and occasional heavy drinking patterns are also addressed through the same approach.

Next step

Book an alcohol reduction hypnotherapy session with Paul or Rebecca Smith, in clinic at Baulkham Hills or via Zoom Australia-wide.

This information does not replace medical advice. If you may be physically dependent on alcohol, see your GP first.
