How to Prepare for Your First Emotional Eating Hypnotherapy Session

Last updated 20 August 2026. Reviewed by Rebecca Smith, clinical hypnotherapist at Norwest Wellbeing.

Quick answer: Notice your specific emotional triggers for eating, what you tend to reach for, and how it feels in the moment versus afterward. Most clients need 2-5 sessions. Results vary.

Step 1: Notice your specific emotional triggers

Stress after work, boredom at home, loneliness, tiredness, even celebration, over the next few days, pay attention to what you're actually feeling in the moments you reach for food without physical hunger. Most people find a smaller number of specific triggers rather than a constant pattern.

Step 2: Notice what you tend to reach for

Specific comfort foods, or just whatever's available, knowing your own pattern helps, though there's no need to judge yourself for it, this is simply useful information for the session.

Step 3: Notice how it feels in the moment versus afterward

The relief or distraction in the moment versus how you feel once the eating episode is over, guilt, physical discomfort, or genuine neutrality, this contrast is often a meaningful part of the pattern and worth being honest with yourself about.

Step 4: Consider whether hunger cues are part of the picture

Some people have lost touch with genuine physical hunger signals after years of eating in response to emotion instead. If this resonates, mention it, since rebuilding awareness of physical hunger can be part of the work.

Step 5: Be honest about the frequency and intensity of episodes

If eating episodes feel frequent, involve a genuine loss of control, or cause significant distress, mention this clearly at intake, since Rebecca may recommend discussing this with your GP alongside the hypnotherapy work.

Quick checklist before you book

  • Specific emotional triggers noticed over a few days
  • What you tend to reach for noted honestly
  • The in-the-moment versus afterward feeling considered
  • Awareness of whether physical hunger cues feel disconnected
  • Honest sense of frequency and intensity of episodes
  • Realistic expectations: 2-5 sessions, aiming for meaningful change rather than an instant fix

What to expect on the day

There is no need to do anything unusual before your session, and no need to have already changed your eating beforehand. The intake conversation is genuinely non-judgemental. The intake and the guided relaxation and suggestion work together generally run under an hour. Sessions are available in clinic at Norwest Wellbeing in Baulkham Hills or via Zoom Australia-wide.

What happens immediately after

Most people feel calm rather than dramatically transformed straight after the session. The real test tends to come the next time you encounter one of your specific emotional triggers, and noticing whether the pull toward food feels less automatic.

Between sessions

Notice whether the urge feels less automatic in your identified trigger situations, and mention this at your next session so Rebecca can adjust the focus of any follow-up work.

Common questions

Do I need to already have a weight loss goal to book this? No, this session focuses on the eating pattern itself, not weight specifically, though many clients notice weight-related changes as a side effect.

What if I think my eating might be more serious than a habit? Mention this honestly during intake. Rebecca can discuss whether a GP referral for further assessment is appropriate alongside or instead of hypnotherapy.

Will I need to discuss my whole relationship with food in detail? The conversation is practical and non-judgemental, focused on your specific triggers and patterns rather than an exhaustive history.

Is it normal to feel a bit exposed talking about this? Yes, very common, and Rebecca will keep the conversation practical and supportive.
