What is strategic psychotherapy?
Strategic psychotherapy is a goal-driven brief therapy that focuses on how you run a problem (the pattern) rather than endlessly analysing why it started.

Strategic psychotherapy is a goal-driven brief therapy. Instead of spending months exploring why a problem began, it examines how you run the problem right now (the specific sequence of thoughts, attention and behaviour that produces it) and then interrupts and replaces that pattern.
The clinical basis
Every persistent problem has a structure. A person with anxiety, for example, doesn't feel anxious at random: they focus on threat, imagine worst-case futures, ask themselves unhelpful questions and tense their body in a repeatable order. Strategic psychotherapy maps that sequence, then targets the steps that keep it going.
Because it works on the present-day pattern rather than distant history, strategic psychotherapy is brief by design. Each session is organised around a defined goal, and you leave with specific tasks to practise between appointments. Active participation between sessions is part of how the change holds.
This makes it a natural partner for hypnotherapy. The conversational work identifies the pattern and builds new responses; hypnosis then rehearses and embeds those responses at the unconscious level, where the old pattern was running.
How it applies at Norwest Wellbeing
At Norwest Wellbeing, strategic psychotherapy and clinical hypnotherapy are combined in the same appointment rather than offered as separate services. Paul Smith holds a Diploma of Psychotherapy (Dip.Psych.Th.) alongside his clinical hypnotherapy qualification and practises as a Strategic Psychotherapist.
A typical session begins with focused conversation: what happens, in what order, and what you want instead. Your practitioner then uses hypnosis to consolidate the new pattern. The 6-Week Anxiety Reset program takes this further, combining clinical hypnotherapy, strategic psychotherapy and NLP in a structured program for anxiety. See hypnotherapy for anxiety.
You don't need to choose between approaches when booking. Book a standard appointment at /appointments or phone (02) 8069 9777, and your practitioner will apply the right mix for your goal. If you'd like to talk it through first, request a free 15-minute callback.
