Hypnotherapy for IBS bloating: evidence review
GDH often improves bloating as part of global IBS scores. Dedicated bloating-primary trials are uncommon.
Last reviewed 27 August 2026
Bloating and visible distension are among the most distressing IBS symptoms. Gut-directed hypnotherapy trials usually capture them inside global or quality-of-life scores rather than as a standalone primary.
Key evidence
Positive global results in Flik 2014 and related RCTs include bloating items for many participants. That is B: consistent secondary signal, not a bloating-only meta-analysis.
Mechanistic talk (visceral sensitivity versus gas production) belongs on the gut–brain and mechanism pages.
Limitations
People with dominant dietary bloating may still need a dietitian. GDH is not a test for SIBO.
What we don't know yet
Whether imagery aimed at “reducing swelling” outperforms generic gut comfort scripts is untested.
