Postnatal Anxiety Hypnotherapy
If worry after birth will not switch off, even during quiet moments with a settled baby, clinical hypnotherapy can work with the automatic alarm response underneath it. It sits beside GP care, not instead of it, and it does not diagnose postnatal anxiety.

What we work with
Persistent worry, panic symptoms, checking behaviours, sleep hypervigilance, and mixed mood alongside depression. COPE notes postnatal anxiety is common, affecting around 1 in 5 women, and often overlaps with depression. If low mood is the primary feature rather than worry, postnatal depression hypnotherapy may be the better-fitting page.
How sessions are structured
The initial consultation focuses on mapping your specific worry patterns and physical symptoms: when they spike, what settles them (if anything), and how they are affecting sleep and daily function. Returning sessions build on that work using hypnotic techniques alongside practical strategies for the moments anxiety tends to peak, such as night feeds, leaving the house, or handing the baby to someone else. Because postnatal anxiety often fluctuates with the baby's routine, you are welcome to bring your baby to sessions, and we can pause if needed.
Course, fees, and practitioner
Rebecca Smith leads perinatal work at Norwest Wellbeing. Initial consultation up to 90 minutes ($300, including an audio recording); returning sessions up to 60 minutes ($300 each). Available at Norwest or via Zoom Australia-wide. Typical course: intake plus 2 to 5 returning sessions.
What hypnotherapy does not replace
Hypnotherapy does not diagnose postnatal anxiety and is not a substitute for medical assessment if symptoms are severe, or if you are experiencing intrusive thoughts about harm. These should always be raised with your GP or midwife promptly; they are a recognised symptom of perinatal anxiety, not evidence that you would act on them, but they need clinical assessment.

Can I bring my baby to sessions? Yes. Many parents do, and we can pause a session if needed for feeding or settling.
Is this safe alongside medication? Hypnotherapy is non-pharmacological and does not interact with medication. Medication decisions stay with your GP or psychiatrist.
What if my anxiety is really about feeding? See breastfeeding anxiety, which addresses anxiety specifically around feeds.
