What is hypnotherapy for children?
Hypnotherapy for children is clinical therapeutic work delivered in a form kids can actually take in — often through story and guided listening rather than sitting across from a therapist. At Norwest Wellbeing, child hypnotherapy is delivered as The Home Session: written for your child after a full intake and a short Zoom meet, then listened to in their own bed.
Does hypnotherapy work for children?
Many families choose child hypnotherapy when clinic appointments stall because of masking, nerves, or short attention spans. Results vary and no outcome is guaranteed, but nightly listening lets the same clinical work repeat in a place your child already feels safe — something a single clinic visit cannot offer.
Is hypnotherapy safe for kids?
Clinical hypnotherapy for children is a complementary approach used alongside, not instead of, medical or psychological care when that care is in place. There is no stage hypnosis and nothing to “make” a child do. The Home Session is listened to at bedtime; if your child is under a GP or mental health professional, this is designed to complement that support.
How does child hypnotherapy at home work?
You complete a clinical child intake, we meet your child on a short Zoom call, then we create an individually written session from that picture. It arrives as two short parts, twelve to fifteen minutes each, listened to lying in bed as they fall asleep — no clinic appointments and no car rides.
Is this only for children with ASD or ADHD?
Not at all. While Paul has deep experience with ASD and ADHD, our child hypnotherapy sessions cover anxiety, anger, friendship struggles, school stress, trust issues, and general confidence. If ADHD or autism is the main challenge, our ADHD and autism hypnotherapy for children page goes into more detail on how the session is shaped for that specifically.
Can I just book an in-clinic appointment for my child instead?
Child sessions at Norwest Wellbeing are delivered as Home Sessions. After years of working with children in the clinic, we found the room itself was the biggest barrier: children mask, perform, or switch off, and one bad appointment can turn them off the work entirely. The Home Session is the same clinical session, the same investment, delivered the way children actually respond to. If you're unsure whether it suits your child, book a free fifteen minute call and we'll talk it through.
What happens on the free call?
It's a relaxed fifteen minute chat about your child: what's going on, what you've tried, and how the session would be created for them. If it's a good fit, we text you the link to get started. If it's not, we'll tell you that too.
How is this different from a hypnosis app or off-the-shelf recording?
Those are made for everyone, which means no one. Your child's Home Session is written after clinical review of your intake and created around their specific issues, personality, and interests. No other child receives it.
My child won't sit still for anything. Will this work?
There is nothing to sit still for. The session comes in two parts of twelve to fifteen minutes each, listened to lying in bed as they fall asleep, like any other night.
My child doesn't trust adults. Won't the Zoom call be a problem?
The Zoom call is short and low pressure, ten to fifteen minutes, mostly your practitioner saying hello and asking a few questions. There's no expectation that your child performs, opens up, or says much at all. After that call, the actual session is just a calm voice inside a story created from their own world, listened to alone in bed. No eye contact, no pressure, no one watching them, at the one time of day they're already relaxed.
When will we notice changes?
Every child is different. With nightly listening, many families report gradual shifts over the first few weeks: calmer evenings, softer reactions, a little more confidence. Hypnotherapy is a process, not a switch.
Will my child need more than one session?
Start with one. We never sell sessions for the sake of it. After a few weeks of listening we look at what has shifted and decide together.
We have an NDIS plan and a therapy team. Does this fit?
Yes. The Home Session complements behavioural therapy, OT, and psychology supports. It does not replace them and does not interfere with them.
Will someone actually meet my child, or is this just based on a form?
Both. The form gives us the full picture from you, and then we book a short Zoom call, ten to fifteen minutes, so your practitioner can say hello to your child directly and ask anything that needs clarifying before the session is created. It's a genuine clinical step, not a formality, and your child's session isn't created until it's happened.
What happens right after I pay?
Instant access to the intake form. Take your time with it. Once submitted, we'll send you a link to book a short call so your practitioner can meet your child, then their session is created and delivered within one to two days.
