Hypnotherapy research and evidence
Clinical hypnotherapy has research support across a range of areas, with the strongest evidence in IBS, pain, anxiety and smoking cessation.

Hypnotherapy is an evidence-informed clinical therapy. Clinical research supports its use across a range of areas, with some of the strongest and longest-standing evidence in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), pain, anxiety and smoking cessation.
What the research covers
Hypnosis has been studied clinically for decades, and the picture that emerges is consistent with how it works: a state of focused attention with heightened responsiveness to suggestion, used to change automatic patterns of thought, sensation and behaviour.
The areas with notable clinical research support include:
- IBS. Gut-directed hypnotherapy is one of the better-researched psychological approaches for irritable bowel syndrome, targeting the gut–brain connection behind symptoms.
- Pain. Hypnosis has a long clinical history in pain management, helping change how pain signals are processed and attended to.
- Anxiety. Hypnotherapy supports anxiety work by rehearsing calm responses at the level where anxious patterns actually run. Automatically, below deliberate thought.
- Smoking cessation. Hypnotherapy is a recognised approach for quitting smoking, addressing the automatic habit loops that nicotine replacement alone doesn't touch.
Research in these and other areas continues to grow. As with any therapy, results vary between individuals, and no reputable practitioner guarantees an outcome. We do not publish a single clinic-wide “success rate”, because that figure would hide how different goals, conditions and client participation really are. For a practical sense of how many visits people often book, see how many sessions will I need.
Reading the evidence sensibly
Two cautions help you evaluate claims anywhere, including ours. First, hypnotherapy is not a miracle cure. It is a structured therapy that requires your participation, including practice between sessions. Second, be wary of anyone quoting a single dramatic "success rate": honest clinical answers are more measured. If a claim sounds too clean, ask about it. See hypnosis myths and facts for other claims worth questioning.
How it applies at Norwest Wellbeing
At Norwest Wellbeing, hypnotherapy is delivered in an evidence-toned, goal-directed way: clinical hypnotherapy combined with strategic psychotherapy, delivered by practitioners who are members of the Australian Hypnotherapists Association and the Hypnotherapy Council of Australia. The clinic works with many of the researched areas directly (anxiety, IBS (including gut-directed work), pain, and quitting smoking) alongside the broader list in conditions we work with.
