Your first gut-directed hypnotherapy session: protocol and assessment
What published GDH protocols do in session one: consent, symptom measures, induction, and homework. Magazine prep lives on the articles site.
Last reviewed 27 August 2026
This page describes what published GDH protocols do on visit one. It is not a clothing-and-parking guide. That magazine piece is how to prepare for your first IBS hypnotherapy session.
Key evidence
Trial intake typically includes:
- Confirmation that red flags have been addressed; see a doctor first
- Rome-based IBS classification and a symptom scale (often IBS-SSS)
- Explanation that GDH is not stage hypnosis and does not require “belief”
- A first induction, gut-focused suggestion, and a recording for daily practice
That structure sits inside the week-by-week Manchester protocol. Outcome evidence is on the hub.
Limitations
Research measures (IBS-SSS, quality-of-life scales) are for trials. A clinic visit may use fewer forms. Session length and who sits in the room vary.
What we don't know yet
Which baseline questionnaire best predicts response is not settled.
